Short Concrete Description of Excellent Military Action or Service.

               

Tank radio operator Mamenko was among the advancing troops during the attack on Rzhev as a part of the 1132nd Rifle Regiment of the 342nd Rifle Division of the 30th Army of the Central Front. Tank’s Commander was killed in combat on 31 December 1942. Sergeant Mamenko assumed the command of the tank. Mamenko’s tank, having advanced, crushed up to 30 Germans, three mortar detachments and a battery of 45mm guns.

 

The enemy fought back fiercely. Heavy artillery of the Germans opened fire on Sergeant Mamenko’s tank. The tank was hit. Sergeant Mamenko was heavily wounded on 1 January 1943. Both of his legs were amputated below the knee. At this time he is an invalid of the 1st Group.
