Commander 22nd Guards Cavalry Regiment

Guards Lt. Colonel (Sukhanov)

5 May 1945

Private Georgii Ivanovich Yakovlev served his country as a mortar man in the 130mm Mortar Battery of the 36th Kazanskii Red Banner Rifle Division. He was a Latvian, who was drafted into the Army in 1944, after the Soviet forces freed his hometown from the German invaders.

During the Koeningsburg campaign, from 6 to 19 April 1945, Private Yakovlev volunteered for advance duty at the frontlines, bringing his mortar into the forward fighting areas. He consistently destroyed all targets given him by the forward observers within five minutes of them being reported.

From the 6th through the 9th, he destroyed four German bunkers, ruined five armored vehicles and exterminated eight enemy solders. Because of this, he was awarded this Order of Glory, Third Class.

Guards Private Timebai Maizhgitov was 'old'- for his actions!   He was a Cossack, born in Alma-Ata in 1897, putting him at the age of 47 when he earned his Order of Glory, serving a Rifleman with the 293rd Guards Rifle Regiment, 96th Guards Rifle Ilovaiskii, Order of Red Banner Division.

His citation reads as follows:

"In the battles on June 24, 1944, which shattered the enemy’s defensive line in the area of point 142.0, north-west of the village of Gorohovishi, Glusskii raion, Polesskaya oblast, comrade Maizhigitov was the first solider to valiantly charge into the enemy’s trenches.  In these trenches, he personally killed two German soldiers in fierce hand-to-hand combat.

"When the Germans from adjoining trenches began to fall back, comrade Maizhigitov exterminated nine more enemy soldiers with accurate fire from his rifle."

Sergeant Ivan Aleksandrovich Mastabai served as a Section Commander, 602nd Rifle Regiment, 109th Rifle Leningradskii Red Banner Division. He was from the Belorus, and had been fighting in Northern Russia since early 1944.  His is the first citation I've had for actions against the Axis Finnish troops for an action on 23 June 1944:

"In the battle for height 86.0 on Karelskii Neck, despite strong enemy fire he carefully allowed the attacking enemy to approach to a distance of 70 meters.  At that point, he commanded his section to open fire, catching the enemy by surprise, exterminating 18 Finnish soldiers and sending the others to a disorganized retreat..."

Private Ivan Igatievich Romanets had recently celebrated his 20th birthday, and had completed nearly a year on the front lines as a Rifleman in the 1st Rifle Battalion, 894th Rifle Regiment, 211th Chernigovskii Rifle Division when he was awarded his Order of Glory.

In his short time in the service, he had seen service on the Bryansk front, repelled the German 'Citadel' offensive at Kursk, advanced to the Dnepr and had liberated Chernigov, the combat there so horrific, and the Division's valor so great, they were awarded the title of 'Chernigovskii' and became an official 'Assault' Division.

On Christmas Eve, 1943, his mettle was again tested, as documented by the following citation:

"On December 24, 1943 in the battles for the village of Solovievka, Brusilovskii raion, Zhitomirskaya oblast, he demonstrated courage and bravery.  He was the first Soviet soldier to enter the enemy-held village, and began shooting the German defenders at point-blank range. In the battle, he personally exterminated 20 German soldiers, directly contributing to the continual forward momentum of our troops..."

He was recommended for the Order of the Red Star, however, he was awarded the 'new' Order of Glory, one of the first on the Front, number 3852!  If you look closely, you'll notice that he polished his Glory to the point of wearing down the detail... Then re-carved the detail by hand!
